Should be there the age limit on the on-line shopping?

I have been talking about the on-line shopping in the earlier bloggs. this time, I found interesting information related to the age limit for on-line shopping especially for some stuff.
In England, they have enforced the law about the consumption of tobacco in restricting the age limit for shopping tobacco on-line. BBC NEWSUKhigher tobacco age limit in force.
The aim of this resolution is to drive down smoking rates in the UK as smoking remains the number one cause of ill health and early death.

However, people have been reluctant to this law, sometimes people think that the government is depriving them from their rights.
" You are considered old enough to have sex at 16, drive the car, and join the army at 17, but the government does'nt want you to smoke until you are 18".

Even though people are unhappy, this resolution is helpeful although it does'nt seem effective; young people can find tobacco elsewhere, without necessarily buy it on-line.
It is known that tobacco has side effects on our life .
When people think of cancers caused by smoking, the first one that comes to mind is always lung cancer. Most cases of lung cancer death close to 90% in men, and 80% in women are caused by cigarette smoking. ( Terry Martin, About.com, August 10, 2005).

Apart from tabacco, they are other items which their acquisition should be restricted depending on the age, in oder to prevent young people get their mind ruined.

Example: Pornography films, sexual materials

Age limit is not applied on e-commerce only, in general every society set up a certain age limit, on which people can start enjoying their rights.

Example: In Rwanda, young people can not get married until they are 21.
The society assume that below this age, people are not mature enough to get married.

  1. This is something that was just a small note in your blog, but it brought up an interesting point. I think it is fascinating that Rwanda has an age limit for marriage. It seems to make sense to me, but I also don't think it seems fair that people who are considered adults (over 18) can't make their own decisions to get married. I have known 18 year olds who are very mature and ready for that kind of commitment. But I have also met 35 year olds who are not ready! I suppose it really depends on each individual. Unfortunately, bad decisions by a few people can affect far more people, like family, friends, and neighbors.

So, can we somehow limit the bad decisions people make in reference to shopping online, or do we allow compplete freedom? It is a complicated question, and I think it is obvious that some people are not responsible enough to successfully manage money online.

  2. I think when teeneagers really decided to something it is hard to change their mind.I believe this can be solved with more parents` and the environment`s care. For example, one of my nephews is addicted smoking in the middle school.Even though his parent spend efforts to get rid of his addiction, these efforts made a counter-productive effect, and consolidated his addiction. What are your suggestions about this?

  3. I think the age's control is a delicated topic. What is the "correct" age to do something? And why? Is it conected to maturity? Baceuse concern to maturity I agree with Greg. Some people have maturity earlier then others.
I think age limit is correct in some cases but many of other I believe need to be made by parents. The problem is, many parents do not want to spend a lot of time with their kids. It happens all the time. But in my mind it is the best way in many cases.
